Venus Goes Retrograde October 3.
Venus turns retrograde on October 3 at 8 degrees Scorpio and doesn't turn direct again until November 13. That's about six weeks of Venus appearing to move backward through the sky, and it doesn't happen often. Venus retrogrades roughly every year and a half, and the last time it did so in Scorpio was 2018.
In people, Venus retrograde gets blamed for exes texting and questionable haircuts. In pets, it's quieter and a lot more specific. Venus is about what a pet loves, and for the next six weeks, a lot of those loves are up for review.
What Venus does in a pet's chart
Venus is the planet of what a pet enjoys. It covers their favorite spot on the couch, the toy they carry from room to room, the exact place behind the ear they want scratched, and the dog at the park they always run straight toward. It also shapes how they give and receive affection: who gets the full-body lean, who gets a polite sniff, and who gets ignored entirely.
When Venus is moving forward, those preferences mostly stay put. When it turns retrograde, the general climate shifts toward revisiting. It won't look the same in every pet, but it's common to see old favorites come back around and newer ones lose a bit of their shine.
What it looks like at home
The clearest sign is usually the toy basket. The stuffed thing that's been under the bed since spring is suddenly the only toy that matters, and the expensive new one you bought last month sits untouched. A cat who abandoned the cardboard box by the radiator moves back in. A dog who stopped caring about a certain walk route starts pulling toward it again.
Affection can shift too. A pet who has been all over a new roommate or partner might drift back toward the person they picked first. A pet who usually loves a long cuddle might want it shorter, or on their terms, or only at a specific time of day. None of this means anything is wrong between you. They're checking in on what they like and who they like it with.
It's also a funny time to introduce big changes that touch comfort. If you've been planning to replace the chewed-up bed or retire the blanket that smells like a dog, it might be worth waiting until mid-November. The same goes for introducing a new pet to the household. It can absolutely work, but expect the getting-to-know-you stage to take a little longer than usual.
On the upside, retrogrades are good for reconnecting. If there's a game you and your pet used to play and haven't in a while, this is a good stretch to bring it back.
How the six weeks unfold
The retrograde starts in Scorpio, a watchful, private sign that loves hard and doesn't share easily. For the first few weeks, the review is mostly about loyalty and closeness: who your pet trusts, where they feel safest, and what they're not willing to give up.
On October 23, Venus lines up with the Sun at the very start of Scorpio. This is the midpoint of the retrograde, the moment when whatever has been circling comes into focus. Two days later, on October 25, Venus backs out of Scorpio and into Libra, the other sign it rules. Libra is sociable and people-oriented, so the second half of the retrograde tends to be less about what your pet is holding onto and more about how everyone in the house gets along.
Venus also isn't the only planet moving backward this fall. Mercury, which has been in Scorpio since the end of September, turns retrograde on October 24. For about three weeks, the planet of what your pet loves and the planet of how they communicate are both in review at once. Expect some crossed signals, a few old habits making a comeback, and more patience needed on both ends of the leash.
Both planets turn direct on November 13, within hours of each other. Things don't snap back into place overnight, but the second half of November usually feels a lot more settled.
Who feels it most
Every pet lives under the same sky, but three signs are closer to this one than the rest.
Taurus. Venus rules Taurus, and Taurus pets are built around comfort: the right bed, the right blanket, dinner at the right time. During the retrograde they tend to hold even tighter to what they know. If a Taurus pet rejects the new bed in favor of a flattened old cushion, let them have the cushion.
Libra. Venus rules Libra too, and it moves back into Libra for the second half of the retrograde. Libra pets like to stay close to their person and follow them from room to room, so late October and early November can bring a little extra shadowing. A Libra pet may also rethink which person in the house is their person, which can sting if you're the one being reconsidered.
Scorpio. Venus turns retrograde in Scorpio's own sign. Scorpio pets are loyal and watchful, and they notice when attention goes somewhere else. A new person, a new pet, or even a phone that's getting too much of your time might get some side-eye. Consistent one-on-one time goes a long way with them right now.
Finding Venus in your pet's chart
Where Venus sits in your own pet's chart says a lot about how they'll take the next six weeks, and about what they love in general. The Pawsigns app builds a full birth chart for cats and dogs, including Venus, and sends weekly horoscopes that follow the retrograde as it moves. If your pet came to you without a birthday, the rescue-friendly assessment uses what you notice about how they act to work out their sign and placements, and narrows their birthday down to a one to three day range. Either way, you'll have a better idea of why the old toy is back in heavy rotation.
