Mercury Is in Scorpio Until December. Your Pet Has Noticed.

Mercury moves into Scorpio on September 30 and stays there until December 6, which is a long time for Mercury. It usually passes through a sign in about three weeks. This year it slows down, turns around, and spends a little over two months in the same sign, retrograde included.

If you've never thought about Mercury in relation to your pet, it's the planet of how they take in the world: what they notice, how they figure things out, and how they tell you what they want. Some pets explain themselves with their whole body. Others let you guess. For the next two months, the sky sides with the second group.

What Mercury in Scorpio looks like at home

Scorpio is a quiet, watchful sign. It notices everything, says very little about it, and remembers. When Mercury moves through here, the general climate shifts from chatter to observation. It won't show up the same way in every pet, but you may see more of the stare from across the room, or the pet who clocks you putting on real shoes and goes to sit by the door before you've touched your keys.

Scorpio is also suspicious by nature, so new things get extra scrutiny. A rearranged couch, a stranger on the usual walk route, a different bag of treats. Expect a longer pause before the verdict comes in. They're taking notes.

And they're keeping them. Mercury in Scorpio doesn't forget easily, which can be sweet (the neighbor who slipped them a biscuit once is now a lifelong friend) and less sweet (the groomer in the green apron is not). If your pet seems to be holding onto something from last week, they probably are.

Venus got there first

Mercury isn't walking into an empty room. Venus has been in Scorpio for a few weeks already, and it turns retrograde on October 3. Venus is the planet of what your pet likes: favorite spots, favorite people, the toy that goes everywhere, the exact place behind the ear they want scratched.

When Venus is retrograde, those preferences tend to run backward. The toy that's been under the couch since spring is suddenly the only toy that matters. An old sleeping spot comes back into rotation. A pet who has been all over a new roommate might drift back to the person they picked first.

Mercury and Venus meet in Scorpio around October 6, so the first week of October is a good time to notice what your pet is choosing and who they're choosing it with. Venus backs out into Libra on October 25, then returns to Scorpio on December 4, just as Mercury is getting ready to leave.

The retrograde, October 24 to November 13

Mercury starts slowing down in early October (the pre-retrograde shadow begins around October 4), stations retrograde on October 24, and turns direct on November 13, the same day as Venus. It then spends the rest of November walking back over the same ground before it finally leaves Scorpio on December 6.

In pets, Mercury retrograde tends to look like crossed wires. A cue they've known for years gets a blank look. An old habit you thought was retired comes back for a visit, like barking at the mail carrier or sleeping on the one chair that's off limits. Signals get misread in both directions, so the tail flick that means "that's enough" and the one that means "keep going" are worth a second look.

The timing this year is a little funny. Halloween lands right in the middle of it, which means doorbells, costumes, and strangers on the stoop during a stretch when your pet is already suspicious of anything unfamiliar. The next morning, November 1, the clocks fall back an hour in the US. Your pet doesn't know about daylight saving time. They know dinner is late.

None of this calls for a lockdown. Keep routines steady where you can, give new things a slower introduction, and if you've been meaning to check that the phone number on their tag is still current, a retrograde is as good an excuse as any.

Who feels it most

Every pet lives under the same sky, but a few signs are closer to the action this time.

Scorpio. Mercury is in their sign for more than two months, which makes an already observant pet even harder to surprise. They'll notice the suitcase before you've decided on the trip. Let them investigate on their own schedule, and try not to take the side-eye personally.

Taurus. Mercury sits directly opposite Taurus, so this stretch can feel like a standoff between what they want and what's happening. A Taurus pet who has decided the walk goes left will not be talked into right, and the retrograde makes them even more attached to the old way of doing things. Stick to the familiar route when you can.

Gemini. Mercury rules Gemini, so when it slows down and goes quiet, they feel it. A pet who usually has a lot to say may get oddly fixated on one thing, or restless in a way that's hard to read. Short bursts of play and new things to figure out go a long way.

When it wraps up

Mercury leaves Scorpio for Sagittarius on December 6, and the mood gets chattier and a lot more forgiving. Until then, the next two months are better for watching than correcting, since that's what your pet is doing anyway.

If you want to know where Mercury, Venus, and the rest of the sky sit in your own pet's chart, the Pawsigns app builds a full birth chart for cats and dogs, plus weekly horoscopes that follow transits like this one as they happen. And if your pet came to you without a birthday, that's what the rescue-friendly assessment is for. Answer a few questions about how your pet acts, and Pawsigns narrows it down to a one to three day birthday range, along with their placements. No paperwork required.
