What an Aries Dog Needs Is Not What You Think

Everyone knows an Aries person. They're the friend who turns a casual game of cards into a tournament, the coworker who answers the question before you've finished asking it, the one who says exactly what they think and has forgotten the argument by lunch. They're a lot. They're also usually the most fun person in the room, and the first to show up when you need help moving.

An Aries dog is that friend with four legs and less impulse control. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and it's ruled by Mars, the planet of action and drive, so these dogs come in fast, loud, and ready. They'd like to be first to the door, first to the ball, and first to find out what that noise was.

The headstrong reputation

Because they come on so strong, Aries dogs get labeled early. Stubborn, pushy, a handful, the dog who needs a firm hand. Owners often respond by getting louder and stricter, which tends to go about as well as arguing with your Aries friend at a dinner party. Mars meets pressure with more pressure. The harder you push, the harder they push back.

What looks like defiance is usually impatience plus a lack of information. An Aries dog wants to act, and if nobody has made it clear what the right action is, they'll pick one themselves. Usually the fastest one. Pulling toward the dog across the street, jumping on the guest, grabbing the toy before you've thrown it. It isn't a power move so much as a dog who got tired of waiting to be told.

What they need: clear rules

Aries dogs do best when the rules are simple, consistent, and the same every time. Sit before the door opens. Four paws on the floor before anyone says hello. The ball gets thrown after it's dropped. When the rule is clear, an Aries dog will often follow it faster than you'd expect, because following it is the quickest way to get what they want.

The trouble starts when the rules shift. If jumping on guests is fine on Saturday and not on Monday, an Aries dog will keep testing it, not out of spite but because the answer hasn't been settled. Same goes for cues that get repeated five times before anything happens. They learn that the first four don't count.

Patience is part of this too. Aries dogs aren't naturally patient, but they can learn to wait when waiting clearly pays off. A calm sit at the door that leads straight to the walk teaches more than any amount of holding them back.

What they need: wins

The other half is letting them succeed, often. Aries is a competitive sign, and these dogs light up when they get something right. Short training sessions that end on a success tend to work better than long ones that end in frustration. A game of tug where they win the rope now and then keeps them keen. Learning a new trick, getting praised for a good sit, finding the toy you hid: all of it counts.

Wins also help with that famous temper. An Aries dog who has had a few good moments in their day has somewhere to put all that drive, and they're a lot less likely to go looking for trouble to fill the gap. And when something does go wrong, they tend to shake it off quickly. Give them a clear next thing to get right, and they'll usually take it.

Put together, it's less about taming an Aries dog and more about giving them a game they understand and can win. Most of them want to be good at it.

Is your dog an Aries?

The Sun sign is only one part of the picture. A dog's Moon, Mars, and the rest of their chart all shape how that Aries energy shows up, which is why two Aries dogs can feel so different to live with. The Pawsigns app builds a full birth chart for your dog, along with weekly horoscopes. And if your dog came to you without a birthday, the rescue-friendly assessment uses what you notice about how they act to work out their sign and placements, and narrows their birthday down to a one to three day range. If they're always the first one out the door, you may already have a guess.
