The New Moon in Libra: What Intentions to Set for Yourself as a Pet Owner

5 min read

The New Moon lands in Libra on Saturday, October 10, at 11:50 a.m. Eastern, at 17 degrees. A New Moon is the start of the lunar cycle, the night the Moon goes dark before it starts building back toward full. It's a starting line: a good time to decide what you want the next month to look like and take one small step toward it.

This one is written for you as a pet owner: the walks you take, the routines you keep, the patience you have or don't have at the end of a long day. Your pet can't set intentions, so you get to set a few for the both of you.

Why Libra matters here

Libra is the sign of partnership and balance. It cares about how two parties get along, whether things feel fair, and whether the household runs smoothly. For pet owners, that's a pretty direct line to the relationship with your pet: how well you read each other, whether the give and take feels even, and how everyone in the house (people and animals) shares the space.

There's a wrinkle this time. Venus, the planet that rules Libra, is retrograde in Scorpio when this New Moon happens. That tends to make it less about starting something brand new and more about recommitting to something you already have. It's a better moment for "I want to take our evening walk seriously again" than for "I'm going to start agility classes."

Scorpio adds its own flavor. It's the sign of trust, attachment, and things left unsaid, so this retrograde is good for looking at habits that crept in over time without anyone deciding on them. In a multi-pet house, it's also a good time to notice any low-level tension between the animals that everyone has been working around.

Venus backs into Libra later this month and turns direct in mid November. That's a natural point to check back in on whatever intention you set now and see how it's holding up.

The good news is that Jupiter in Leo is sextile the New Moon, a supportive angle that usually adds some warmth and generosity to the mix. Small, affectionate intentions tend to stick.

Who feels this one most

If you have planets or angles around 14 to 20 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn, this New Moon is likely to hit closer to home for you.

How to read it for yourself

Start with your Rising sign. Your Rising determines which area of your life the New Moon falls in, and the readings below are written around that. If you don't know your Rising, use your Moon sign instead, and if you don't know either, your Sun sign works as a stand-in. The placement won't be as precise, but the theme usually still lands.

Intentions for pet owners, by sign

Aries. This New Moon lands right on your relationships, including the one with your pet. Let them take the lead on one thing this week, whether it's the route on a walk, the game you play, or where you spend the evening together. Notice how different it is from what you'd have picked.

Taurus. Libra falls in your sixth house, which astrologers traditionally connect to daily routines and to pets themselves. This New Moon is about as literal as it gets for you. Pick one part of the day, like the morning walk or dinnertime, and make it a little better than it has to be.

Gemini. For you, this one is about play. It's easy to keep a pet fed and walked and still forget to have fun with them. Set an intention to bring back a game you used to play, or to find a new one you both like.

Cancer. This New Moon falls on home and family. Get down to your pet's eye level and look at where they sleep, eat, and hide. If any of those spots sits in a hallway, next to a loud appliance, or somewhere people walk through all day, move it somewhere quieter.

Leo. Libra lands on communication and the stretch of neighborhood you cover every day. Listen to yourself for a day and count how many different words you use for the same request. If "come," "here," and "let's go" all mean the same thing, pick one and stick with it.

Virgo. This one lands on resources and comfort, meaning what you spend and what feels worth it. It's a good time to sort through the supplies, toss what doesn't get used, and put the money toward the one thing your pet actually loves.

Libra. The New Moon is in your sign, so it's about you directly. Pick one part of the pet routine that works for your pet but not for you, like a walk time that wrecks your whole morning, and adjust it so it works for both of you.

Scorpio. Libra falls in the quietest part of your chart, the part about rest and what happens behind the scenes. Your intention can be simple: more slow time with your pet. Fewer outings, more lying on the floor together doing nothing.

Sagittarius. This one lands on community and friends. Learn the name of one person you only know by their pet's name, whether it's a dog run regular or a neighbor down the hall. Or text the friend who last watched your pet and thank them properly.

Capricorn. For you, Libra falls on work and responsibility. Put your pet on your calendar like a meeting: twenty minutes a day that don't move for anything else. Then see how many days you actually keep it.

Aquarius. This New Moon lands on learning and new experiences. Pick one specific thing to learn this month: one new cue to teach, one new route to walk, or what your pet's ears are doing when they're unsure about something. One, not all three.

Pisces. Libra falls on trust and closeness for you. If you tend to absorb your pet's moods, notice the next time they get anxious and check whether you got anxious first or second. Being the steady one in the room is the intention.

Your pet has a chart too

Your intentions will go further if you know who you're setting them with. The Pawsigns app builds a full birth chart for your cat or dog and sends weekly horoscopes that follow the Moon through each cycle. If your pet came to you without a birthday, the rescue-friendly assessment uses what you notice about how they act to work out their sign and placements, and narrows their birthday down to a one to three day range.

Once you have their chart, the app's owner and pet compatibility readings compare it with yours, planet by planet, so you can see where the two of you click and where things take a little more give and take. Fitting for a Libra New Moon.
